On the last day of his visit to Brazil, U.S. Special Envoy for Climate Change John Kerry said projects under way in the U.S. Congress have up to $13.5 billion to finance environmental preservation and energy transition initiatives in developing countries and that some of these resources could be directed to the Amazon Fund.
He stressed, however, that the release of resources will still depend on political articulation and recalled that The United States' support for the fund may also come from other sources, such as development banks and the carbon market.
Kerry and his entourage discussed the topic with Environment Minister Marina Silva. At the end of the meeting, held at the portfolio's head office, the two made a statement to the press in which the governments of Brazil and the United States reinforced their commitment to joint action on several fronts of environmental preservation.
"We have a bill in the Senate that has $4.5 billion as a goal and another in the House, which has $9 billion. But we know we're going to have a fight ahead of us. That's why we're working with a multilateral development bank and also on the carbon market," Kerry said when asked about the U.S. contribution to the Amazon Fund.
Marina pointed out that American participation https://admin.backstage.globoi.com/apps/multi-content/umsoplaneta/multi-content/ important not only for the values involved, but "for the gravitational force that the United States exerts" in the world. She clarified that the final amount of the contribution depends on a number of factors and that the U.S. government will seek to maximize sources of resources.
The minister also said that Kerry expressed the desire to return to Brazil soon to visit the Amazon. The script, however, has not yet been defined. The teams of the two countries intend to develop the terms of the partnership by April, when the meeting of environment ministers takes place in the framework of the G20 in India.
Prior to the meeting with Marina, Kerry welcomed Indigenous Peoples Minister Sonia Guajajara. According to Valor, the two talked about the partnership between the two countries and also talked about financing actions to protect the original peoples. Kerry said Guajajara's "historic" nomination for the post "inspires a new generation of leaders." He was also with the President of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG).
