The Brazilian Wheat Industry Association (Abitrigo) issued a note favorable to the approval of the planting, import and commercialization of gmo wheat, HB4, from Bioceres. The positioning was presented last Friday (3).

The document signed by the president of the entity, Rubens Barbosa, considers that the measure solves the operational risk that existed since the approval of the import of flour with genetically modified wheat. Thus, the institution assesses that the decision now brings "tranquility to the different actors of the market".

Abitrigo reinforces that it is in favor of the development of innovations that bring benefit to the health and food safety of Brazilians. With this, it signals that it will limit itself to "offering comments on the marketing aspect of the decision".

Transgenic wheat in Brazil

As, according to the entity, there have been no manifestations contrary to gmo wheat since the approval of the import of flour, and research conducted in the period showed signs that Brazilians were not opposed to the use, the entity believes that "the final word will stay with consumers".
