'Mad cow': Ministry of Agriculture confirms that case in Pará is atypical

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Map) confirmed on the night of Thursday (2), by official note, that the case of "mad cow" or bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) detected in the municipality of Marabá (PA) is atypical
The confirmation was based on the analysis of the reference laboratory of the World Organization of Animal Health (OMSA) in Canada, where a tissue sample of the sick animal was sent.
Thus, it confirms what the Brazilian government had already suspected, that this is an isolated and spontaneous case, which does not offer risks of contamination to other animals, nor to humans.
The Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Carlos Fávaro, said he immediately communicated the result of the sample to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and immediately began the insertion of said information in the system for official communication to OMSA and the Chinese authorities.
Export embargo to China
According to a statement from the Map, once the process is complete, a virtual meeting will be scheduled with the Chinese government to deal with the embargo of the export of beef to the country.
"I emphasize that speed, efficiency and transparency requested by President Lula was fundamental. I thank our team and the governor of Pará, Helder Barbalho, who has allowed us a quick action since the identification of the case", said Fávaro.
Because it is an atypical case of the "mad cow disease", that is, occurred by natural causes in a single 9-year-old animal and with all sanitary measures adopted promptly, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock reported that it was immediately adopting the measures, according to sanitary protocols, so that exports of Brazilian beef are reestablished as soon as possible.
