Sugar: U.S. beet yield offsets sugarcane stake, USDA says
segunda-feira, fevereiro 13, 2023
The good yields reported by U.S. beet sugar producers this season will offset the not-so-good numbers of sugarcane producers in the South and ensure high levels of sugar production for the country, the government said Wednesday, 8.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) raised its estimate for beet sugar production in its monthly supply and demand report to 5.1 million tons short, up from 5.04 million in the previous report, saying beet sugar yields in the top five regions exceeded ten-year averages.
On the other hand, the department reported problems for Louisiana sugarcane producers.
"With the end of the sugar campaign, the USDA contacted the mills in relation to the final production of the crop year. The plants confirmed that yields were below previous USDA estimates due to the freeze at the end of December," he said.
Louisiana's sugar production was reduced by 82.86 short tons to 2.03 million short tons.
Total U.S. sugar production, including beetroot and sugarcane, was projected at 9.23 million short tons in the 2022/23 season (October to September), basically at the same level as 2021/22 and on track to be the second largest on record.
Imports were little changed in the report by 3.46 million short tonnes. This led to an estimated 14.8% for the stock-consumption ratio, a level considered comfortable, although import expectations in recent years have not been fully confirmed, as some supplier countries have failed to meet their quotas.
