Severe drought in Argentina makes room for Brazilian soybeans
segunda-feira, fevereiro 27, 2023
According to a bulletin published by IMEA, the soybean harvest for the 22/23 crop in Mato Grosso has already exceeded half of the total area, reaching 60.03% of the finished areas by 17/02, demonstrating an advance of 15.93 p.p. comparing to the results of the last weeks. For the first time during the harvest, crops are with full steam harvest, presenting a percentage of 2.20 p.p. above the average of the last five years, however, it is still 7.72 p.p. below that observed in the previous harvest.
The areas of Mato Grosso that are standing out with the highest numbers of harvested areas are north (73.83%), middle-north (71.21%) and west (61.29%), also showing an increase of 0.67% in the productivity of the areas harvested during this week compared to last week's results, estimating an average of 62.28 sc/ha.
The expectation for next week is over the northeast and southeast regions, as large rainy volumes are estimated for the area, from 55 to 65mm, according to the Noaa (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration).
ARGENTINA
The severe drought in Argentina has reflected in the soybean market. According to the Cereal Exchange, 55.00% of the areas are in regular or poor conditions, due to records of high temperatures and lack of moisture in the soil. Producers in the country are already even abandoning their areas and shortening the plant cycle, which directly interferes with productivity.
Furthermore, the Cereal Exchange estimates that production will be 38.00 million tons, representing about 10 million tons less than initially expected for the 22/23 crop.
This impacts the market as a whole, as it negatively alters the supply of by-products such as soybean oil and bran, since Argentina is the largest exporter of these. Thus, a space is opened for greater participation of Brazil as a supplier of these by-products and also other producing countries.
