Rich countries should support developing countries for gas reduction, says Climate Observatory secretary
terça-feira, novembro 08, 2022
The executive secretary of the Climate Observatory, Marcio Astrini, told CNN on Sunday (6) it is necessary that rich countries financially support developing countries in the transition from their energy matrices to cleaner solutions.
The topic will be discussed during COP27, an event that began this Sunday that brings together global leaders in climate change debates in Egypt.
"We need rich countries to deliver on their promises to help developing countries change their matrices, especially energy, to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions," Astrini said.
According to him, another financial aid package for poor countries impacted by climate change will also be discussed.
Astrini cited the example of Pakistan, which suffered from flooding in a third of its territory. The record rains led 1,700 people to death and 7.9 million were forced to displace, reaching 33 million affected individuals.
As CNN showed, extreme heatwaves, droughts and devastating floods affected millions and cost billions in 2022, according to an interim report on the global climate status of 2022 by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
