On Monday (31), the Norwegian Minister of Environment, Espen Barth Eide, announced that the European country will resume donations to the Amazon Fund, which were paralyzed since 2019 after the Brazilian government presented suggestions for changes in the application of resources and extinguish collegiate management.
The fund was created in 2008 and received donations from international institutions and governments to finance actions to prevent and combat deforestation in the Legal Amazon. "We had a good and very close collaboration with the government before Bolsonaro and deforestation in Brazil decreased a lot under the [previous] presidency of Lula da Silva. Then we had a head-on collision with Bolsonaro whose approach was diametrically opposed when it came to deforestation," Barth Eide told AFP.
From January to October 21, 2022, deforestation alerts in the Legal Amazon accumulated 9,277 km², the worst mark in deter's annual historical series, the Real-Time Deforestation Detection system of the Space Research Institute (Inpe). The brand surpassed even the record in all of 2019, the worst rate so far, when the alerts jumped and reached up to 9,178 km².
According to the minister, about five billion Swedish kroner (US$483 million) that was not given in this period of interruption are waiting to be transferred to the fund. In his inauguration speech on Sunday night (30), Lula said that Brazil was "ready to regain its place in the fight against the climate crisis, especially the Amazon" and promised to "fight for zero deforestation".
