Fipronil insecticide is banned in Costa Rica
sexta-feira, novembro 25, 2022
Fipronil is an insecticide and termiticide used to control pests that cause damage to the production of cotton, soybeans, rice, irrigated rice, beans, corn, among others. In Brazil, the sale of the product for agricultural application is only allowed with agronomic revenue. The insecticide has been banned in Costa Rica since early November.
The prohibition prohibits professional or industrial use, according to Executive Decree No. 43767-S-MINAE published in the Official Gazette that establishes a period of six months for the product to be exhausted in the national market. It is also forbidden to import, manufacture, formulation, storage, distribution, transportation, repackaging, mixing, distribution and active use of the active ingredient of Fipronil.
The protection of professional or industrial use is related to the application carried out by companies in physical facilities and not in the environment, such as agricultural practices, says Henry Picado, spokesman for the Ecologist Federation. The insecticide is already banned in more than 30 countries around the world, including those in the European Union, because it is considered highly dangerous, especially for bees.
