Brazil's process of access to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) took another step forward.
The Brazilian government has forwarded to the international body, which brings together the most industrialized economies on the planet, the initial memorandum, which will serve as the basis for evaluating the country's alignment with the group's commitments.
Sent by letter dated September 30, the memo was detailed on Thursday (6) in ceremony at the Planalto Palace.
The delivery of the document was foreseen in brazil's roadmap for the group, approved by the OECD in June.
With 1,170 pages, the memorandum assesses the degree of alignment of the laws, policies and practices of the candidate country to the standards established by the OECD in 32 different sectors.
Among the areas analyzed are trade, investment, digital economy, health, education, environment, competition, tourism and nuclear energy.
The level of compliance with each of the 230 OECD standards has been analysed, of which 208 are indispensable for entry into the organisation.
According to the Brazilian government, the country has adhered to 108 standards and is in the process of adhering to 45 more.
For Foreign Minister Carlos França, Brazil has to gain from the entry into the OECD, a process that takes decades. "The deepening of relations with the OECD, once it culminates with Brazil's entry into the organization, will help us deal with our bottlenecks and our shortcomings, the famous Brazil cost," he said.
Also present at the solemnity, Economy Minister Paulo Guedes said that oecd's asswill help Brazil consolidate as one of the world's leading economies. According to him, the process paves the way for access to important international bodies, such as a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
Process
In January of this year, Brazil received the letter of invitation to begin the process of accession to the OECD.
In addition to Brazil, the organization invited five countries: Argentina, Peru, Romania, Bulgaria and Croatia.
The country presented a plan of action, which was approved by the OECD in June. The schedule provided for the delivery of the memorandum before the end of the year.
The work of analyzing Brazil's alignment with OECD standards involved 972 technicians from the federal government from 26 ministries.
Without a set deadline, the oecd-to-be process will end when, after technical reviews and other discussions, the Governing Council decides to extend the formal invitation to Brazil to access the organization. According to the government, convergence to OECD standards is part of a broad strategy to strengthen Brazil's insertion abroad.
