Biosensor detects hidden rot in potatoes
sexta-feira, setembro 23, 2022
Researchers from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HU) and the Israel Agricultural Research Organization (Volcani Institute) have developed a sensor capable of detecting rot in potatoes and early detection of hidden diseases in tubers.
The sensor has bioengineering and intelligent optics, in contact with an infected potato, the bacterial compound rises, indicating the concentration and composition of rot. "The intensity of the light emitted by the bacteria panel allows us to quickly and quantifiably analyze the characteristics of the disease," explains Evgeni Eltzov, doctor at the Volcani Institute.
The biosensor will help identify sick potatoes, which do not yet have external indication, preventing rot from developing in healthy tubers. For scientists, the early discovery of diseases offers a significant advantage for producers, that of identifying quickly and economically, which helps in post-harvest management and food waste.
