Incidence of disease that attacks corn, causes concern in the U.S.
terça-feira, março 21, 2023
Incidences of the disease known as tar spot were seen in corn crops in Kansas, Nebraska and South Dakota in the last growing season, Kansas State University said in a study published earlier this month.
According to information from Dow Jones Newswires, the fungal disease creates dark lesions on the corn leaves and ultimately kills the plant. Reports indicate that these are the first cases of the disease in the Great Plains of the United States, which could become a growing problem for the nation's corn crops.
"It is estimated that (the disease) caused losses of $3 billion to farmers in the U.S. from 2018 to 2021 and has the potential to become more destructive in states that are now recording cases," Daniel Flynn of Price Futures Group said in a note.
