Avian flu: Chile kills nearly 40,000 animals
sexta-feira, março 17, 2023
Almost 40,000 birds in the breeding phase were slaughtered in Chile due to the spread of avian influenza, detected on a farm in the O'Higgins region. The information is from the Agricultural Service (SAG) of the South American country.
The bird slaughters occurred in accordance with the recommendations of the World Organization for Animal Health (OMSA), according to local authorities. Despite this, SAG indicates that it was a very limited outbreak. Thus, the Chilean body states that there is a need to alarm the population.
Also in this way, the SAG recalled that the risk of infection by the avian influenza virus is only for workers exposed to secretions from infected birds. In this sense, the service stressed that, so far, there has been no transmission between humans in Chile.
Finally, the agency pointed out that avian influenza is not a disease that is transmitted through food intake. Therefore, the SAG points out, it is safe to consume poultry derivatives from formal distributors with sanitary resolution.
Avian flu causes Chile to suspend exports
Thus, in the face of outbreaks of avian influenza, exports of chicken meat have been suspended by Chile since the beginning of this week. According to the local government, 12 Chilean regions have occurrences of the disease, which has already affected 27 species of birds in the country.
