The redirection of federal policies for the environment has aroused global interest, especially with regard to the preservation of biomes in the midst of climate change. With the reactivation of the Amazon Fund, international aid could soon be expanded with the UK's membership, reuters reports.
The British Minister of the environment, Therese Coffey, was in Brasilia for the inauguration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and spoke with ministers of the new government, such as Marina Silva (Environment), Carlos Favaro (Agriculture) and Sonia Guajajara (Indigenous People).
"It's something we're seriously looking at," Coffey told the news agency. According to the minister, the British are already the third largest international supporter of the Brazilian environment, with donations of 250 million pounds sterling (R$ 1.6 billion) throughout the partnership between the nations.
The amount would be equivalent to the total of the Amazon Fund, which today accumulates about R$ 1.7 billion in donations. After the resumption of the fund by the federal government, the President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, announced on Monday (2), in Manaus, a new donation of the country to the fund, totaling 35 million euros (R $ 199 million).
The British environment minister told Reuters that the UK has "much to offer Brazil", such as rural sustainability programmes and low-carbon architecture, as well as helping the country mobilize international funds, with London being a global centre for green funding.
In Brasilia, Coffey was invited by the governor of Pará, Helder Barbalho, to visit the Amazon state to see projects in the rainforest
