Peru to overtake Chile in grape exports
segunda-feira, janeiro 09, 2023
Chile's position as the largest exporter of grapes is being threatened by the growth of shipments from Peru. Unlike Chile, which has been experiencing a year-on-year decline in production, Peru has not recorded decreases in its production since the 2001/02 harvest. According to the USDA, the production of grapes from the 2022/23 Chilean harvest is projected at 737,000 tons, while The Peruvian is expected to total 766,000 tons.
In the area of exports, those in Chile are expected to total 555,000 tons, representing 75.31% of total production. In Peru, the share of exports should exceed that of its competitor, with about 76.37% of production, equivalent to 585,000 tons.
If the estimate is confirmed, this will be the first season with Peru at the top of the ranking of the world's largest exporters. It is worth remembering that the two countries are extremely dependent on exports and are also complementary: while Peruvians export from November to February, Chileans export from February to May.
Another important factor is that the two countries have the United States as the main buyer; however, with each passing year, Chilean shipments to North America fall.
