Hybrid wheat could reduce fears over genetically modified foods
terça-feira, janeiro 03, 2023
A new type of hybrid wheat will be available to American farmers and could reduce fears about genetically modified crops. The new hybrid is being introduced as seed companies around the world seek to increase production due to declining grain supply.
The hybrid wheat was developed by the Chinese agricultural company Syngenta, without genetic engineering. The first seeds to grow wheat will be released on 2,000 to 2,800 hectares of U.S. farmland, reuters news agency reports.
Developers, or breeders, have developed hybrid wheat by taking away the natural ability of plants to pollinate themselves. Instead, female wheat plants in a field are pollinated by male plants of a different lineage. The goal of the process is to create seeds that can produce larger crops and better resist harmful environments.
