European country returns to avian flu outbreak
terça-feira, janeiro 31, 2023
Romania reported an outbreak of high pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza, commonly called avian influenza, on a farm in the center of the country, the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) said on Monday.
According to Reuters news agency, the outbreak in the town of Codlea, near Brasov, infected 42,154 poultry, killing 23,472 of them, Paris-based WOAH said. The organization cited information from Romanian health authorities.
It was the first occurrence of the disease in the eastern European country since May last year. Avian flu decimated tens of millions of birds in Europe last year. Many of the birds were slaughtered to stop the spread of the disease.
Avian influenza in Europe
Romania is not the only nation in Europe to tackle the problem. Since mid-2022, countries such as the Netherlands, Poland and Hungary have recorded outbreaks of the disease. In December, the Government of France even defined that the situation of avian influenza was "even more dramatic".
Brazil continues without reports of the disease.
