European Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans indicated that the bloc will begin contributing to the Amazon Fund, an initiative funded by the Brazilian government by Germany and Norway to combat deforestation in the biome.

"What we can talk about today is that we will contribute to the fund. What I can't say today is how much, we still have to define this in the European Union," timmermans, who is traveling to Brazil, said in an interview with TV Globo.

The Vice-President of the European Union Executive added that he expects the contribution to be formalised before COP28, which takes place between November 30 and December 12 in Dubai.

The Amazon Fund was established in 2008, but had been paralyzed under Jair Bolsonaro. Germany recently unlocked €35 million to reactivate the initiative.
