Avian influenza in South America: Brazil reinforces health barriers
segunda-feira, janeiro 16, 2023
Avian influenza affects both domestic and wild birds. It is caused by a virus that can undergo several mutations, so the control of the disease in the world requires a lot of attention. A single notification already generates alerts in national and international animal health control bodies and, depending on the severity, can result in sanitary barriers for the marketing of poultry products between countries.
Brazil has never recorded cases of avian influenza and continues to invest in maintaining sanitary barriers to prevent the virus from entering here. Since last year, outbreaks of the disease have been reported in several nations around the world, and avian influenza has arrived in South America. Peru, Colombia, Chile, Venezuela and Ecuador have reported cases of the disease in the last three months, so the Brazilian government has lit the alert in the country.
Ligados & Integrados spoke with Ronaldo Teixeira, general coordinator of planning and animal evaluation at the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, to learn more about the current scenario.
