Uruguay launches new citrus varieties
quinta-feira, dezembro 22, 2022
Uruguay's Citrus Breeding Program announced that it has launched a new set of mandarins and oranges through the National Citrus Consortium. According to the program, the varieties are the result of 30 years of research and development with the National Institute of Agricultural Research of Uruguay (INIA) and the University of the Republic of Uruguay (Udelar).
The varieties were "carefully selected, covering a wide market window and tested by producers and consumers, following the new trend in citrus fruit consumption," INIA said.
The new varieties were launched this year in the Mediterranean Basin and the Uruguayan Citrus Consortium is now seeking to expand its licensed territories to the Southern Hemisphere and North America.
"This is an excellent opportunity to increase market strength and build long-term R&D alliances for the development of new citrus varieties," said Rivas, variety development creator at INIA.
