Niger reports h5N1 avian flu outbreak

Niger reported the contagious H5N1 strain of avian influenza among birds in a village in the south of the country, said the World Organization for Animal Health, based in Paris (France), on Tuesday (27).
According to Reuters news agency, the outbreak in niger's southern Tahoua region killed most of a flock of 4,920 birds, with the rest being slaughtered.
The outbreak of the disease, the first in Niger since July 2021, occurred in birds ordered in the Zinder region by a local non-governmental organization, the World Organization for Animal Health added.

Parts of Africa were affected by an unprecedented event in a global wave of avian flu infections last year that has led to the deaths of more than 100 million birds in Europe and the United States.
