Most anticipated scientific discoveries for 2023
sexta-feira, dezembro 30, 2022
This year, several advances in science, medicine and space exploration have been made in the world, leaving precedents and foundations to continue development in 2023. This includes the Artemis program of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), which brought the world's attention back to the exploration of the Moon, and new methodologies for the rapid and effective development of vaccines.
These are five expected advances, according to the BBC:
New generation of vaccines: the success in the development of mRNA vaccines to combat the covid-19 pandemic has allowed the exploitation of these immunizers for other viruses and diseases. This includes public health problems such as malaria, tuberculosis, genital herpes, HIV, cystic fibrosis, cancer, and various types of lung diseases.
Advanced space observation: The precedent in this field was set by the launch of the James Webb Space Telescope, the instrument launched by NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Canadian Space Agency. This leads ESA to launch the Euclid telescope in 2023, which aims to enter solar orbit for six years and thus create a 3D map of the universe, while Japan's Aerospace Exploration Agency works on a mission to detect X-ray radiation from distant stars and galaxies.
CRISPR genetic engineering: CRISPR-Cas9, a gene editing technique that allows you to alter a DNA tape, cutting part of it and reconstituting it to form a new sequence, is expected next year. Promising results have been observed in clinical trials against two genetic blood diseases, including sickle cell disease.
