Mite burst on tomato may be with days numbered

The burst mite has known resistance to more than 95 active ingredients. Tomato production in a greenhouse, for example, faces major problems with the disease, as insect pests and mites reduce the yield of tomato crop.
Chemical pesticides have been the mainus of pest management practices, the tetranychus urticae burst mite (TSSM) is at the top of the list of global pesticide-resistant pests, specifically acaricides, chemicals developed to control mites.
Researchers from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) studied TSSM populations in greenhouses in order to confirm the presence of resistance or reduced susceptibility of mites.
With this, the results of the research can provide the producer and industry with information to develop a resistance management strategy for the next crop.
In addition, resistance to acaricides is a growing concern for tomato growers who rely on leaf treatments with acaricides to control TSSM, the researchers estimate.
