Avian influenza continues to have new confirmed cases. On Tuesday (20), the National Office of Food Chain Security (Nebih), Hungary's health agency, reported that the outbreak give H5N1 virus was identified on a farm breeding turkeys.
As highlighted by The Safras Agency, based on information from Reuters, authorities in the European country have begun slaughtering more than 25,000 turkeys at the site where the avian influenza virus has been identified. The outbreak in question was reported on rural property in Hajdu-Bihar — a county on the Hungarian border with Romania.
This is not, however, the first outbreak of avian influenza reported by Hungary this year. In November, Nebih had stated that H5N1 had been identified on three farms spread across two counties: Bacs-Kiskun (south, border with Serbia) and Bekes (to the east, also in the border area with Hungary).
Avian influenza around the world
In Europe, the Netherlands, France and Poland have been other countries that have reported outbreaks of avian influenza over the past few months. The United States (North America) and Taiwan (Asia) also had confirmed cases. In South America, the disease had confirmations in Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela.
