The Ministries of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil and Paraguay signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in animal health. The confirmation of the agreement between the two countries was announced on Wednesday (23).
"Brazil and Paraguay have similar challenges, especially in border regions," said Brazilian Agriculture Minister Marcos Montes.
The objective is for the two countries to be able to cooperate in the exchange of information on animal health, in the joint action of epidemiological surveillance in the municipalities located at the border line and in the joint action of health surveillance at the points of entry into the border line.
Animal health and tilapia production
The ministers of Brazil and Paraguay also discussed the procedures necessary to enable the cultivation of tilapia in the Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant Reservoir, which is on the border between the countries.
The productive potential is estimated at 400,000 tons of tilapia annually, with annual revenues of R$ 2 billion and generation of 10,000 direct jobs and 40,000 indirect jobs.
The ministry explains that to make production feasible, it is necessary to amend the law by Paraguay and reshape the Agreement for the Conservation of Aquatic Fauna in the Courses of the Border Rivers concluded between the respective governments in 1999 to authorize the cultivation of exotic species in the reservoir.
