About 100 ships departing from Ukraine are awaiting inspection at Turkey's ports, according to United Nations data. Ships departing on September 23 are still awaiting inspection outside Istanbul under the agreement between Russia and Ukraine that allows the shipment of agricultural products from Ukrainian ports.
About 2.05 million metric tons of wheat, corn and soybeans, among other products, are on board the ships, the UN said. The ships departed from Ukrainian ports, including Odesa, Chornomorsk and Yuzhny and Pivdennyi. More than 300 ships have departed from ports since the agreement was negotiated in late July and implemented around August 1, carrying 6.87 million metric tons of grain and other food, the organization said.
Corn was the most abundant crop shipped so far, with about 3 million tons on board ships. Wheat exports totaled 2.1 million tons, sunflower shipments were reported at 414,000 tons and rapeseed exports reached 390,000 tons, the UN said. Spain was the largest destination, followed by Turkey, Italy and China.
Ukrainian farmers are trying to speed up their shipments of grains and oilseeds as fighting intensifies between Ukraine and Russia, Commerzbank analysts said in a note to clients this morning.
