The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is at the forefront of global efforts to promote innovations in bioeconomics and make our agri-food systems more sustainable, Director General QU Dongyu said today at a European Union conference in Brussels. Qu spoke at the conference, entitled The Bioeconomy - Enabling the European Green Deal in Challenging Times, during its high-level opening session, together with key members of the European Commission, representatives of the Czech EU Presidency and Member States.
The Director-General noted that a biotechnology-based economy with bioindustry and bioproducts, along with innovations, can play an important role in addressing current challenges, ranging from the growing impact of the climate crisis to rising food and production prices amid ongoing conflicts and the war in Ukraine. Meanwhile, the latest FAO report on The State of Food and Nutrition Security in the World reports that up to 828 million people went hungry last year – an increase of 150 million since 2019.
"If we want to overcome these challenges, we must fully recognize that agriculture is a fundamental part of the solution and that innovation in agri-food systems is key," Qu said. "We must use science and innovation to help mitigate, adapt and build resilience in the face of climate change and achieve new levels of productivity, quality, diversity, efficiency and environmental sustainability in agri-food systems." Promoting a circular bioeconomy can also help combat the scourge of food loss and waste. Lost or wasted food each year can feed 1.26 billion people, according to FAO estimates.
