Brazil must bring solution to energy crisis to COP27, minister says
segunda-feira, outubro 17, 2022
The Minister of the Environment, Joaquim Leite, said on Friday (14), in São Paulo, during a meeting with businessmen of the American Chamber of Commerce for Brazil, that the country will take to the United Nations Conference on Climate Change 2022 (COP27), between 6 and 18 November, in Egypt, the idea that Brazil is part of the solution to the energy crisis that occurs worldwide.
According to him, in one of the stands in the country will be presented 10 gigawatts (GW) of wind biomass and a panel with 700 GW of marine wind to show that Brazil has the potential for surplus energies, being able to export this energy.
He added that Brazil's representatives at COP27 should also address the issue of global policies to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide or carbon dioxide (CO2). There will also be in the Brazilian booth the presentation of panels of presidents of companies and entrepreneurs showing what is done in Brazil, in addition to a space of about 120 square meters exposing biomes and Brazilian waters.
Energy efficiency
During the presentation to entrepreneurs, the minister stressed that he has been constantly talking to the private sector to improve energy efficiency.
"We intend to create a new green economy, reduce emissions by 2050 along with the private sector, which is the one that will give the scale. This will happen by seeking profitable climate solutions for the entrepreneur, for the environment and for people through public policies that can be developed together," he said.
The Minister of the Environment also commented that, in order to encourage green transformation, it is necessary to give tax incentives to specific sectors. "We have several ways to encourage: via the government's own actions and tax. I think we have a good possibility of green growth there and taxes will be a good differential to make that happen", he detailed.
He also said that the regulated carbon market in the country was created via decree and sectors that want to trade have to meet minimum criteria defined in decree. He added that what is missing are the segments joining the climate neutrality commitment by 2050.
"This is how this market is created, created by a global demand already realized in 2021. Who creates the market are the entrepreneurs who have their commitments. People might want me to create a mandatory market, that I give the rule to force everyone to reduce emissions at the speed that the federal government understands it should be for each of the sectors. The chance of this going wrong is huge, because you (entrepreneurs) already have this commitment", he pondered.
