Fertilizer market defends plan to ensure sovereignty and food security

The fertilizer sector, meeting this week at Exposibram, reaffirmed the importance of maintaining recent public policies in favor of a balance between domestic production and imports.
In a statement, the executive director of the National Union of The Fertilizer Raw Materials Industry (Sinprifert), Bernardo Silva, criticized the policy that, "in the last 25 years", encouraged imports and led to "deterioration of national production".
He recalls that today there are 20 operations in 10 Brazilian states. According to Mosaic Fertilizantes' vice president of public relations, sustainability, strategy and business development, Arthur Liacre, there is potential to grow, since national production accounts for only 10% of what is consumed.
Fertilizers: strategic industry
Silva, of Sinprifert, says the industry is strategic for the world, not only for food security, but for national security. "Fertilizers, despite being global commodities, have exploration concentrated in mineral reserve and not all countries have this privilege," he said.
"Brazil has a lot of resources for this and we need to exploit it to have national sovereignty, since fertilizers have been used in these geopolitical disputes," Silva added.
