With corn ethanol expansion, Brazil exports DDGS to Vietnam
quarta-feira, agosto 17, 2022
After Brazil expanded its production of ethanol from corn, shipments of DDGS (dry grains from distillery with solubles), a co-product rich in nutrients and serving as an ingredient for animal feed, are increasingly frequent.
A ship left the Brazilian port of Paranaguá earlier this week, transporting about 55,000 tons of DDGS to Vietnam, the port authority of Paranaguá told Reuters.
Brazilian corn ethanol production is estimated at 4.5 billion liters in the 2022/2023 crop, an increase of 31% over the previous season, according to data from Unem (National Union of Corn Ethanol). This number, according to the entity, will represent about 15% of the total ethanol production in Brazil if this projection is confirmed.
The cargo sent is the third shipment of DDGS from Paranaguá. Two previous charges were to the UK and Turkey, the source told Reuters. The first report of a Brazilian shipment of DDGS was in 2019, when 27,000 tons were sent via Paranaguá, according to data from the Brazilian watertransport agency.
The following year, two shipments totaling 56,251 tons were sent from the ports of Paranaguá and Santos, the data showed. In 2021, almost 118,000 tons were shipped from private ports in Sergipe and Amazonas, according to the same data set.
In the seven months of 2022, and not counting today's cargo, about 101,400 tons of DDGS were shipped mainly by Imbituba, port of Santa Catarina, the port authority of Paranaguá told Reuters.
