Representatives of the European Union recently sought the Brazilian government to reinstate negotiations for the mercosur agreement, according to information released by Reuters News Agency. With this, the Brazilian government believes that a design of global value chains is taking place, especially after the pandemic and the war in Ukraine, which would have expanded Brazil's power in the negotiations.
The EU indicated that it would send a proposal to Brazil since 2021, mainly related to environmental demand items, but news about deforestation in the Amazon ended up generating criticism of Jair Bolsonaro's government abroad. "This discussion was buried, they again discussed the agreement between Mercosur and the European Union precisely because they need agricultural, mineral and energy commodities, they can no longer count on Russia, there is the problem of supply chain diseruption, excessive dependence on Asia," said an anonymous source quoted by Reuters.
In this scenario, a European diplomat told the agency that the resumption of contact to effect a new round of talks with Brazil. For the Brazilian government, Europeans said they are interested in ratifying the agreement and both sides of the table will discuss the terms. "The movement has taken on new momentum. He was paralyzed and walking again," he said.
This contact ends up arriving on the eve of the Brazilian election campaign, started today, where the main candidates in the polls are current President Jair Bolsonaro and former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The latter had recently said that he would ask the EU to reopen negotiations on the agreement to add points on environmental protection, human rights and technology.
