Although the Chinese have the largest tomato crop in the world, the European Union, the economic bloc of European countries, produced 6.2 million tons of fresh tomatoes in 2022. Although the number is quite expressive, production fell by 3% compared to 2021.
Tomatoes, a vegetable product on the European table, according to data from the European Commission's report on the prospects for the 2022 agricultural market, the vegetable maintains the downward trend of recent years. Among the main factors are lower greenhouse production, and change in planted varieties.
In relation to exports, the report highlights the drop in production and consumption and a decrease in EU exports attributed to Brexit, a gradual loss of the UK market. Last year, imports of fresh tomatoes from the European Union came from Morocco and Turkey. Even so, imports of fresh tomatoes in the EU have increased by 23% over the last five years.
