Ukraine sends cereals back on alternative routes
terça-feira, junho 14, 2022
Despite the war, Ukraine has managed to establish alternative routes for the export of cereals and the first charges are already beginning to arrive in Europe. A freighter with 18,000 tons of corn arrived at a Spanish port on Monday, June 13, using a new open sea route in the Baltic Sea to bypass Russian blockades in the Black Sea.
Exports were also re-established by recovering at least two more routes through Poland and Romania. The expectation is that Ukrainians will start to drain at least 30 million tons of cerealthat is stored on their territory and have not yet been destroyed or stolen by Russia.
"These routes are not perfect because they contain narrow passages, but we are doing our best to develop them as soon as possible," Ukrainian Deputy Minister Dmytro Senik said in a statement to Reuters news agency. He revealed that he is also negotiating with the Baltic states to create a third export route, and that was precisely the tested route to bring Ukrainian corn to Spain this week.
The Russian invasion caused the suspension of Ukrainian cereal exports across the Black Sea and caused widespread shortages, as well as inflation in food prices. Ukraine is the world's fourth largest grain exporter, but Russia has blocked maritime exports by blocking Ukrainian ports and sea routes in the Black Sea, and continues to carry out missile attacks on terminals, grain elevators and railway infrastructure.
