Transformation of food oils into biofuels grows in Portugal

The amount of used food oils that are transformed into sustainable fuels is growing in Portugal, namely HVO biodiesel (hydrogen-treated vegetable oil) and SAF (aviation biofuel). Part of this impulse originates from the company Hardlevel – Renewable Energies, one of the main operators of the recycling sector of waste food oils in our country.
Hardlevel's network covers more than 100 municipalities and currently has more than 2,500 smart olions installed, serving about 3.5 million municipalities. In Lisbon alone the company has installed a number of more than 200 Smart S+ olions, which are available to the more than 500,000 inhabitants of the capital. And the trend is growth.
Despite the positive curve, there is still a need to sensitize the population to the importance of recycling used food oils, since of the 43,000 to 65,000 tons produced annually, it is estimated that 60% is destined for sewage.
Equipped with IoT (Internet of Things) devices, Hardlevel's Smart S+ olions allow you to detect the filling level in real time, preventing spills on the public road, as well as tracking the deposits of used food oils made by users and reporting on the available capacity in real time. These olions are also prepared to account for each person's deposit and award points that give access to prizes.
In addition, the company has installed more than 200 collection points in supermarkets, hypermarkets and fuel retailers, allowing it to reach much of the national territory.
Headquartered in Vila Nova de Gaia and with logistics and pretreatment centers elsewhere in the country, Hardlevel has an installed pretreatment capacity of 50,000 tons of waste food oils per year and 4500 cubic meters of instant storage at the operational centers of Avanca and Palmela.
The company is also internationalising its intelligent management model of used food oils in Spain and France,
