Giants close partnership for biomethane
sexta-feira, junho 17, 2022
Two Brazilian giants, Petrobras and Raízen announced this week that they have partnered to prospect potential biomethane deals. The agreement involves the production, purchase and sale of renewable fuel produced by Raízen from sugarcane waste.
Biomethane, similar to natural gas, is inserted in the category of sustainable fuels, such as R5 diesel and BioQAV. It is an alternative to fossil fuels, with the potential to reduce direct greenhouse gas emissions by more than 90%.
"This project is an opportunity to connect the production of renewable biomethane with the production of high quality fuels and refining products that, in this way, will be obtained with lower carbon emissions. The initiative reinforces our commitment to seek economic and sustainable opportunities that combine value generation and low carbon, offering better quality and environmentally efficient products," said Petrobras President José Mauro Coelho.
The CEO of Raízen, Ricardo Mussa, says that biomethane production expands the company's portfolio of renewable solutions, ensuring economy and sustainability: "Biomethane has a high potential for decarbonization and the possibility of use in the most diverse sectors of the economy. With investments in innovation and technology, we can extract the most from sugarcane biomass, increasing the sustainable potential of our chain and driving the reduction of CO2 emissions from our partners. We believe in the potential of sugarcane for the generation of numerous energy solutions and biomethane production is an important step to accelerate the energy transition in the country."
