Renewable fibres attract major car manufacturers

BComp, a Swiss startup that has developed a renewable and sustainable substitute for carbon fiber, has just raised more than $35 million in a new round of investments led primarily by BMW, Volvo, Porsche, Airbus and other leading funds in the automotive, aerospace and mobility sectors in general.
Bcomp has developed a process to produce an ultra-resistant and lightweight material from agricultural waste from flax cultivation. Their applications have found a prominent place in motorsport, reaching up to Formula 1. Its applications have also aroused particular interest in the aerospace industry, nautical architecture and infrastructure in general.
With its patented ampliTex technologies™ and powerRibs™, Bcomp offers an alternative to reduce environmental impact on products that require lightweight, strong and rigid composites. In addition to the environmental benefits in relation to carbon fiber, the compound most used in the manufacture of these elements, the damping of vibrations of the material developed by BComp is significantly higher, which reduces the risk of sudden breakage.
The flax fibers used to produce ampliTex™ and powerRibs™ sequester carbon dioxide during growth and act as a rotating crop to improve the health of soil and subsequent crops. They are also native to their growing areas, which translates into low water and fertilizer requirements for long-term sustainability. Since the parts are no longer needed, the monomaterial can be recycled or used for energy recovery in incineration plants.
