Falken company of the Sumitomo Rubber Industries Group (SRI), the 5th largest tire manufacturer in the world, and researchers in Japan have added a new "ingredient" to the tyre composition.
That's where the tomato comes in, researchers have developed new versions of rubber, using tomato enzymes. According to the research, tomatoes and rubber have similar structures and belong to the same group of enzymes. Therefore, engineers will be able to use this biomolecule present in tomatoes, with properties superior to natural rubber, in the manufacture of the green tire, known as an ecological tire, in this specific red case.
