EU-Mercosul agreement may have mato-grossense agenda

Negotiations between the European Union (EU) and the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) can now take into account the questioning of the European proposal for regulations on deforestation-free products presented by the Mato Grosso Institute of Meat (Imac) to the European Commission and the European Parliament. This is because some countries have been sensitive to the suggestions made by the institution that is of cooperation in the environmental area rather than boycott and adjustments of deadlines so that the small producer is not excluded from the formal chain.
"The fact that Brazil is the largest biodiversity on the planet and is struggling to implement a complex forest code puts us as a first world country in the climate debate. In addition to producers of environmental services essential to the regulation of the world climate, we are relevant in the supply of food and reference in clean energy production, with more than 80% of the energy produced in Brazil being renewable. In the new global paradigm there is no room for European protectionism anymore, and Brazil projects itself as a power, those who have eyes that see", said the president of Imac, Caio Penido.
According to Bruno Andrade, the EU regulation, provides for an obligation for European industries and importers to carry out a series of checks on their suppliers. In the case of meat, it would be the refrigeration industry and its direct and indirect suppliers. "They ask for proof that the entire meat production chain, for example, does not have contamination with general deforestation and other socio-environmental non-conformities, taking from the market ranchers who are in the process of regularization and disrespecting the right of other producers to legally open new areas," he explained.
