According to those responsible for the development of this variety, genetically modified rice has agrotechnical characteristics similar to traditional varieties when grown without the use of herbicides. "However, treatment with paraquat resulted in loss of vegetation and interruption of chloroplast structure of plant leaves, while genetically modified rice retained the complete structure of chloroplast even at high concentrations of paraquat," explains Fertilizer Daily.
"The research conducted opens the possibility for the widespread use of genetically modified rice in China's agriculture. Experiments will also be carried out to increase the resistance of other agricultural crops to paraquat in the future," he adds.
In September 2020, the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) banned the use of paraquat in Brazil. The toxicological reassessment of Paraquat was determined in 2008 by Anvisa and finalized in 2017, where the agency published Collegiate Board Resolutions (DRC) No. 177 and 190 of 2017, which "provides for the prohibition of the active ingredient Paraquat in pesticideproducts in the country and on the transitional measures of risk mitigation".
