Embraer and U.S.-based Pratt & Whitney, which operates in the aircraft engine business, tested an aircraft with 100% sustainable fuel - and the 70-minute flight was a success. According to the Brazilian manufacturer, the reduction of CO² emissions can reach 85% with green fuel.
The test was done with model E 195-E2, a line of medium-range twin-engine aircraft. The fuel used was the so-called SAF, an acronym for sustainable aviation fuel.
"The E2 is already the most efficient single-aisle aircraft on the market today, saving up to 25% CO² emissions when compared to previous generations of the aircraft. The replacement of old aircraft by new generation products and the use of SAF in production are the two most effective actions in commercial aviation to achieve a significant reduction in emissions," Rodrigo Silva e Souza, Vice President of Strategy and Sustainability at Embraer Aviação Comercial, said in a statement.
The first tests were done on the ground at Fort Lauderdale International Airport. The aircraft then took off from Vero Beach Regional Airport in Florida.
According to the executive, the commercial operation with the new fuel still depends on certification. Today, both Embraer aircraft and Pratt & Whitney engines are certified to operate with a mixture of up to 50% APS added to kerosene.
