Consumption of biofuels increases in the European Union

In addition to the blockades imposed in 2021 and 2022 because of the pandemic has been causing consumption of ethanol and biodiesel to increase in the European Union, Russia's invasion of Ukraine has led to increases in fossil fuel prices for the transportation sector.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the rise in gasoline prices has increased the competitiveness of the ethanol component, boosting sales of lower and higher blends.

Biodiesel consumption is expected to stagnate in 2022, as the increased use of biodiesel with higher greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction values means fewer volumes are needed to meet mandates.

According to The Safras Agency, eu ethanol production is expected to increase with the use of larger volumes of sugar beet. Biodiesel production, on the other hand, is expected to stagnate and palm oil will be partially replaced by used cooking oil and rapeseed oil.
