High prices have not stopped organic growth

Steady growth and continued demand have defined the organic market for several decades. In 2020, during the height of the COVID pandemic, total sales of organic food and non-food products yielded more than $60 billion, according to a 2021 Organic Industry Survey released by the Organic Trade Association.
But analysts at Mercaris, a market information service and online trading platform for organic and identity products and ingredients, wonder how the organic market will cope with current economic trends. Kellee James, founder and CEO of Mercaris, and Ryan Koory, Vice President of Economics at Mercaris, presented their insights and perspectives during an opening session at sosland publishing co's annual shopping seminar. in early June.
"Organic food sales continue to outperform conventional food sales," Koory said, showing that organic food sales grew 9% from 2009 to 2019 compared to conventional food sales that grew only 3% in the same period.
Koory said organic food sales in the United States grew 13 percent in 2020, arguing that sales reflect consumer retail purchases, where consumers have greater access and purchasing power for organic products, as other food opportunities, such as restaurants and schools, have been closed. Koory said post-pandemic consumer behavior has not been redefined and organic sales continue to grow, but he and other analysts are noting consumer reaction to inflation strains.
