Victory of Brazilian Science! Researchers from the Federal University of Ceará were able to develop a biolubricant of plant origin in partnership with Petrobras that works the same as conventional, with the concept of sustainability. It is a breakthrough in the oil and gas sector in search of solutions to reduce the burning of petroleum-based fossil fuels and use of conventional lubricants.
Moreover, the steady increase in the price of petroleum-based fuels is causing many people to rethink the use of products of this origin. Thus, the biolubricant would be an alternative and cheaper solution for the maintenance of engines, without losing the efficiency of normal lubricants. Learn more about this totally Brazilian invention.
Biolubricant developed in partnership with Petrobras is of vegetable origin of products such as soybean, castor bean, sunflower and carnaúba
The search for potential substitutes for petroleum-based products is the goal of several researchers in favor of sustainability. Petrobras invests in research in this direction, aiming to reduce the impacts on the environment.
Conventional lubricant is used in vehicle engines to ensure proper operation of gears and increase service life. However, it has its origin mainly in oil. Thinking of an alternative, the researchers at the Federal University of Ceará sought to develop a new biolubricant of plant origin.
In this case, the lubricant can be produced from soybean, carnauba, babassu, cotton, sunflower and castor bean, the latter being the most efficient. This origin reduces the composition of oil in oil used for engines and is considered a renewable source.
Therefore, the lubricant of plant origin created has high added value being created by a new chemical method, increasing the competitiveness of this product in the market. This invention, in partnership with Petrobras, secured the 28th patent (registration of new inventions) to the University.
Biolubricant created in partnership with Petrobras is biodegradable and ensures sustainability
Lubricant, or oil, is widely used in vehicles such as hydraulic fluids or to ensure the operation of the engine or compressors. However, a major issue is still the disposal of this material, because the degradation in nature takes many years.
However, the biolubricant developed in partnership with Petrobras promises a degradation within 28 days, because of plant origin. This is unprecedented and allows greater sustainability in the oil and gas sector, increasing competitive advantage.
It is worth noting that studies are still advancing to catalyze and make production faster. But, registration as a Brazilian invention has already been made through the patent registration, which was requested in 2018 and had its approval in May 2022. This gives Brazil the possession of the formula for the production of this biolubricant to be able to market and prevent someone from copying the idea.
