U.S. ethanol industry to research aquaculture
sexta-feira, maio 06, 2022
The U.S. Grain Council (USGC) and the Faculty of Agriculture at Aydin Adnan Menderes University in Turkey have agreed to create a new aquaculture training center in Turkey to study the use of dry distillery grains with solubles (DDGS), a byproduct of corn bioethanol production also known as burlanda, in the nutrition of rainbow trout.
The rainbow trout market is experiencing substantial growth at a rate of 30% per year in the last two years. Rainbow trout is considered a less expensive alternative to salmon caught in the wild, and the use of DDGS in food can provide a low-cost, high-quality alternative to the growing sector.
The USGC, funded by the North Dakota Corn Utilization Council, will donate the equipment for an on-site pilot test that will investigate the use of DDGS in rainbow trout rations. In addition to the test, the USGC will bring industry representatives to Turkey to provide training on converting DDGS into ply-skinned feed for fish.
The test will be carried out throughout 2022 and will continue to present the results to the Turkish industry. The center will remain open for the next five years as the USGC plans to continue using the equipment to conduct other nutritional tests, as well as provide several training sessions.
"This partnership will be essential to start our commitment to aquaculture in the Turkish market," said Reece Cannady, USGC's deputy regional director for the Middle East and Europe. "The faculty of Aydin Adnan Menderes is at the forefront of aquaculture research in Turkey, as well as having long experience in the use of dry distillery grains with solubles (DDGS) in fish feeding."
