The Wheat Sector Table of the Argentine Neutral Carbon Program (PACN) has just presented the 'Carbon Footprint Calculator' and a Manual of Good Agricultural Practices, two tools that will allow the agricultural producer to implement improvements in the environmental performance of its production for when there is a market for agricultural carbon bonds in the country.
The Sector Table is implemented through the voluntary training of Sector Tables in which producers, groups and/or associations, companies and sectoral chambers of each of the productive links of the value chain participate, ensuring full national geographic representation.
Belén Iácono, Sustainability Manager at Yara Latam. One of the member companies of the Wheat Sector Board said that "Our participation is strategic and is in line with the company's vision of having environmentally positive solutions. This is an example of how we, in the phase where we have to participate, can impact the kilo of food," he said.
The executive highlighted the need to work collaboratively between the different actors in the chain. "What we seek is to decarbonize the food chain. At Yara we believe that this process of decarbonization of the chain is something collaborative, which can not be done alone. That's why it's so important that there are companies from various sectors and segments of the chain at the tables, because we all have something to contribute."
The Calculator is a tool that allows the producer to load all their practices and know the emissions and the impact that their production generates on the environment. From Yara, validated and certified information was provided on the values that include from manufacturing to field application, necessary to perform the calculations in the fertilizer category. This represents an advantage for producers, because when there is a carbon bond market in Argentina, it will no longer be necessary to request certificates, as they will already be available in this program.
